Diesel crankshaft grinding and remanufacturing requires special equipment. Certainly among the first considerations is the length of the crankshaft. Many automotive machine shops have crankshaft grinding machines with a 48 inch maximum distance between the chucks. Should a Detroit Diesel crankshaft require welding, this same consideration applies to the welding machine.
Another important factor to consider is the size of the radius. Most automotive machine shops can accommodate a 1/8 inch radius or less. Most of the larger Detroit Diesel crankshafts have a 1/8 inch radius or larger.
Straightening a bent Detroit Diesel crankshaft can be difficult if the length is long. However, most automotive machine shops that straighten typical automotive crankshafts should be able to accommodate the occasional long crankshaft.
